Aw, Lauren, it's great to read your post today. It encouraged me even more! I've been wanting to start a YouTube channel for years! Two weeks ago, I finally decided to try it and signed up for a video editing course in October. I've been experimenting with video-making and visual storytelling, and I absolutely love it. I'm excited to document more of my art and life now that I've turned 40.
There's so much content on YouTube for people in their 20s and 30s, but very few YouTubers I resonate with who are my age. I don't watch Netflix or anything else, but I'm a very active watcher on YouTube. I just subscribed to your channel. You should also check out Orla Stevens, a fellow artist on YouTube and Substack.
Thank you for the mention Tuğba! 🩵 hope you have a great time on the course and can’t wait to see what you make - videos are so so fun - and can’t wait to check out your videos Lauren ☀️
Thank you for saying that, Amber! I think it’s important to listen to yourself and do the things that make sense in each season of life. This is where my excitement has led and I’m really looking forward to seeing where it goes.
I am soo very interested in why you have chosen to create on TikTok and YouTube! Especially after all of our conversations regarding social media. I look forward to the YouTube videos and seeing your process unfold!
I’ve always said I never knew if/when I’d return to social media. But ultimately TikTok and YouTube feel so different to me than Instagram. I think it’s because I never formed a relationship to either of them the way I did with Instagram. While I know they are both technically a social media platform, they’re so much more of a search engine. So that’s been my focus. Not likes and comments. Another reason it feels different to me is because it started with my interest in video, not social media. I wanted to learn how to record videos - the art of filmmaking. I follow some film photographers on YouTube and am so inspired by their channels. Then, when I decided to curate what I was shooting into shorts, I chose platforms that I felt made the most sense for video medium.
That makes total sense! I do remember you saying you didn’t have a plan as far as when you’d get back into some form of social media. I am really glad you found platforms that feel right for you, and I’m extra glad that I can see more into your process now that you’re sharing video content. I’ve tried to get more interested in film and video but it isn’t my thing…I just don’t enjoy making it. But I enjoy watching!

Pleasure! Happy Weekend Orla 🖤
I love watching you move forward, shift and do the new. Best to you Lauren. I’ll see you on Instagram in the future. 😉
